THE GUESSING GAME...

A FEW WEEKS AGO I WAS READING... (SHOCKING I KNOW).

I WAS GETTING ALL CAUGHT UP ON MY FAVORITE D PEEPS WHEN I CAME ACROSS THIS POST BY NICOLE.

YOU SEE... JUSTIN DOESN'T ALWAYS FEEL HIS LOWS. MOST OF THE TIME HIS ACTIONS ALERT ME(OR HIS TEACHERS) TO A POSSIBLE "PROBLEM".

THING IS... I OFTEN HEAR PWD'S SAY THAT THEY KNOW WHAT THERE NUMBERS ARE BEFORE THEY EVEN CHECK.

WHY CAN'T WE(MEANING JUSTIN) DO THIS? IF WE(JUSTIN) COULD... MAYBE WE(OH, YOU KNOW WHO I MEAN) WOULD CATCH IT DROPPING WHEN IT HITS 80 RATHER THAN 39. JUST SAYIN!

SO... AS I AM READING NICOLE'S POST~ SHE TELLS ABOUT A GAME SHE PLAYS WITH CARA. IN THIS GAME, THEY WOULD ASSES HOW SHE FEELS AND GUESS THE NUMBER OF HER BLOOD SUGAR BEFORE SHE TESTED. GENIUS!! WHY CAN'T I THINK OF SUCH THINGS??

THIS WOULD MAKE JUSTIN HAVE TO THINK ABOUT HOW HE FEELS AND MAYBE HELP HIM START RECOGNISING THE FACT THAT HE'S DROPPING BEFORE HE'S TO THE POINT WHERE SOMEONE ELSE HAS TO NOTICE FOR HIM... RIGHT?

TONIGHT... WE FINALLY TRIED IT. HE CAME IN THE ROOM AND SAID HE "FELT FUNNY" ABOUT 30 AFTER DINNER.

ME~ HOW DO YOU FEEL?
J~ JUST FUNNY
ME~ LET'S GUESS, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR NUMBER WILL BE?
J~CAN I HAVE A RANGE? (SMART KID RIGHT?)
ME~ SURE!
J~ UM! FIFTY TO FIFTY NINE
ME~ SO IN THE 50'S?
J~ YES!

CLICK-POKE-BEEP... 51

NICE! (NOT THE NUMBER... JUST THE FACT THAT HE WAS RIGHT).

LATER ON, BEFORE BED, WE PLAYED AGAIN.

JUSTIN'S GUESS... 100-120 (HIS RANGE WAS A LITTLE WIDER THIS TIME)

ACTUAL RESULTS... 100 EVEN.

DAMN... HE'S KINDA GOOD AT THIS, I THOUGHT. SO WHY CAN'T HE FEEL HIS LOWS?? CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN THAT TO ME?

ANYWAYS... THINKING I WAS ALL SMART(WELL, NOT ME, NICOLE) I POSTED WHAT HE DID.

WELL SHIT!!!!

ALL KINDS OF D MAMAS DO THIS...  HALLIE, MERI, HEIDI, HEATHER, KRIS, JUST TO NAME A FEW. WHO KNEW? AND WHY DIDN'T ANYONE LET ME IN ON THE SECRET? OR AM I JUST REALLY THAT SLOW? (DON'T ANSWER THAT!)

ALL I CAN SAY IS... THANKS FOR LOOKING OUT FOR ME NICOLE!!

AND... TO SHARE THE LUV. HERE I AM. RE-POSTING ABOUT "THE GAME". JUST IN CASE THERE IS ONE MAMA LEFT THAT IS SLOWER THAN ME ;0) ANYONE? ANYONE?

ON A SIDE NOTE: HE WAS ACTUALLY HAPPY TO PLAY THE GAME... IT MADE ME SMILE. IT'S NOT OFTEN YOU GET TO HAVE FUN WHERE D IS CONCERNED. GOTTA TAKE WHAT YOU CAN GET.

LETS JUST HOPE THAT THIS HELPS IN OUR QUEST TO CATCH OUR JUSTIN'S LOWS.

We love this game! Sweets, her teacher, the nurse, and the kid she chooses to take with her to the clinic and to get snack all guess. The other kid usually guesses something like 10 or 1000. It is fun! Hasn't helped her feel lows tho..... Yet!!

I wonder if its not so much he doesnt feel them, that he is out of it and not voicing them? I dont know if that made any sense.

Raising my hand here in VT...I am the "slow D Mama!" I haven't played this one with Joe. I'll start giving it a shot. Good job to Justin.

When I blog I always use "we" "us" when to say Cara. Type 1 is just a team sport right now :) and thanks for the link up and the love and I'm glad he loves the game.

Play on :)

Hope this helps him feel those lows! I know it's helped Jack tune in to his body.

we play it.
Actually it started when my husband and I were dating I couldn't believe that he could feel what his BG was, to me that's incredibly intuative, so I'd take the meter after he go the blood on the test strip and would ask what he thought it was...he was always within 10pts, ALWAYS. Still is. However, I notice the more distracted he is like with playing sports or watching a movie the worse he is at guessing his number.
Now we play the same game with Isaac but mostly focus on the question of will it be a two digit or three digit number? This helps quite a bit for us right now.

wanted to add that this is a frequent game hubbster and I played while dating just for a while when I was figuring out what this diabetes stuff was about in the dating realm...and when we do it now it's just to help Isaac see his father dealing with d, too.

Hey, I didn't think of this game on my own either. My fab school nurse did. And it's a whole front office game. When Ryan pops in for lunch, they guess, Ryan, the nurse, the school secretary and the attendance secretary (they are all basically in the same area). They have a sticker chart and all and keep up with who wins for the week and everything. It's a major bragging rights thing. I'm sure you aren't interested in reading another post about the game, but I blogged about it a while back how much Ryan loves it and has learned. http://embracediabetes.wordpress.com/2010/03/11/glucose-game/
Have a wonderful Friday!

Ha! I'll have to try it with Ellie. She has just 3 "numbers"...skittle numbers, do nothing numbers and insulin numbers...that's my little simple peach! Loves!

Keep playing the game, I betcha he keeps getting better and better at feeling his lows!

What a rockstar for being spot on with his guesses!

We've played that game too!!!! But it was only like a one time deal, you know...for kicks and giggles. WHAT A GENIUS THING TO DO to help drive it home.

We're jumping on the game bandwagon...starting with dinner in 30 minutes :)

I'm slower than you Lora, we've never played the game! It sounds so fun! I don't think Austin would be anywhere near at first but maybe it would help him eventually get more in tune with his body. Thanks for sharing!

We've played too, but somehow we've gotten away from it, I think we'll get back to it. My girl finnally felt a low at school yesterday, I want her to feel all of those lows. Good job!

Hi, I just came to your blog from Shannon's blog. Well I did not know about this game and think it sounds like a great idea! Thanks for posting about it. My daughter is only 5, but I have been trying to talk to her about how she feels when she is high or low without much luck...I'm going to start this game with her.
