The "Almost" Accidental Bolus...

The look on his face was in indescribable as he grabbed his pump and let out a sigh of relief. It said 0.00u delivered.

I asked him what was wrong and he gasps that he almost gave himself insulin by accident. I could guarantee that the look on my face was then, almost as indescribable as I started my lecture on the importance of the lock feature. At this point I'm thinking a whole lot of buttons had to be pushed to deliver that insulin, until...

"I know" he says, "but I accidentally pushed this button". "What button?" "The one on Top".

To be honest, I was under the impression that this was an audio button and otherwise useless, but apparently if the audio portion is not in use... it is an bolus shortcut. WHA?? Kind of a safety fail for the younger ones, in my unsolicited opinion.

Don't get me wrong, we love our Ping. I was just a little surprised because we have never had this happen(so I thought). I did try to turn that button off all together, searched the web for directions and then called tech support, but it's not an option. REALLY? There's an option to turn off the audio, but no option to turn off the ez bolus. WHY NOT?

The only suggestion the rep offered was to "keep it locked". Thanks, I had that one on my own, but shit happens; he is only 11 ya know.

My complaint here is... Though it wouldn't be overly common, I can see how it could be completely possible to give an accidental bolus this way. The rep did not agree with this statement, but Justin did today. It delivered. Maybe this time it did only deliver 0.00 units, but one more "accidental" push of a button and things would have been different. Just sayin!

Did you know???

I am a ride/roller coaster junkie! If there is a ride in site... I am on it! (only exception would be the Gravitron... holy hurl!) My kids do not fall far from the tree when it comes to thrill seeking rides either.

However, I was reading a newsletter that I received from Animas. This thought would have never crossed my mind, so I thought it was important to share with all the other pumpin ride junkies.

COPIED FROM THE ANIMAS NEWSLETTER...
Are you planning a trip to an amusement park? Remember to take precautions to be sure that your pump is protected during your trip. Very powerful electromagnets are sometimes used on "free-fall" amusement park rides. Pumps should be removed and not taken on these "free-fall" types of rides. High gravity forces can be experienced when riding on some roller-coasters. It is recommended that you disconnect (NOT just suspend) your pump while on roller-coaster rides. Contact your health care provider for further recommendations regarding possible changes to your insulin needs at amusement parks.

I guess this is why I SHOULD always read the instructions?!?!

*When your site gets pulled out as your mom is putting dinner on the table... site changes sucks!

*When you do more than one site changes in a day(or in two days for that matter)... site changes sucks!

*In the middle of the night... site changes sucks!

*When it's time to leave for school and you pull your site out... site changes sucks!

*When your not home and you have no supplies, but you need a site change... site changes sucks!

*When you need a site change and UPS has not delivered your pump supplies... site changes sucks!

*In an airplane... site changes sucks!

*When you point the tube in the wrong direction... site changes sucks!

*When you get a batch of insets with bad adhesive... site changes sucks!

*When you do a site change with bad insulin...site changes suck!

*When your super awesome site changing hubbys out of town... site changes suck!

*When you pull out a site and it's a bleeder... site changes suck!

*When your embarrassed because your moms lookin at your butt... site changes suck!

*When you get bubbles... site changes suck!

*When you pull out your site while taking off your clothes... site changes suck!

What makes site changes suck for you????

**Disclaimer... this post was meant to be funny and not at all a bitch session. It was inspired as Justin brought me his site(in hand) after I told him to come sit down for dinner.

D'com and Ninja...

AKA: DexCom and Ping ;)

That's right people... we now have goofy nicknames.

I was the one who wanted to name the CGM. Hey... all my bloggy friends were doing it!!
I mentioned D'com to Justin because I thought it had a Transformer sort of feel to it. As usual, he wanted options so I told him the names of some other Dexcom's out there. You know who you are Dex, Dexter & Dexie. He didn't want to use a name that someone else had (he gets that honest) so D'com it was.

It didn't take but a minute for Justin to get on board with the idea and QUICKLY decide that his pump needed a name too. After about 20 minutes of thought... he blurts out "Ninja". Apparently his focus skills were on a much higher level than mine because I really had no clue what he was talking about. At least one of us is still with it.

So there you have it... D'com and the Ninja in full force at our house. I look forward to writing about our adventures soon.

Happy Wednesday!!!
