Halloween 2012...

OY! Its Halloween... I've never been a huge Halloween fan. Its okay, I guess, I could take it or leave it(mostly leave it). Of course my kids view it as dressing up to haul in loads and loads of candy. I veiw it as a big ol waist of money to take your kids out among the crowded mess of crazies, in order to gather a sack of cheep shit that I will slowly throw away without them even noticing. To each their own.

This year, Halloween has me a little more on edge; and it has nothng to do with the 11 year old diabetic gathering sugary candy... I'm cool with that. The bigger issue is that I have a sweet, trusting (but responsible) 13 year old that wants to trick or treat in the neighborhood with her friends. As in... without a responsible adult (insert heart attack here).

I am not on board with this plan at all, and was totally counting on the hubs to be even less on board. So you can totally imagine my jaw hitting the floored when, out of the blue, he asked HER if she was going trick or treating with her friends this year. WHA??? How dare him mess up my "it ain't happening cuz ur dads gonna say no way" back up plan!

I was totally calling him unpleasant names in my head.

Look... I get it, I do! I went out by myself at her age(maybe even younger); and to be honest... she is probably more responsible then I was(am?), but things were just different. Its not her I don't trust.

So... since dad threw off my "mean mom routine" by being okay with it; I guess we will see how she does. Dag-nab-it!!

If this is my last post for a while... they probably had to commit me. Just sayin!

Hope you all have a safe and happy Halloween.

HALLOWEEN WRAP UP...

It was a successful All Hallows Eve night at our house if I do say so myself. This being our third one in... my nerves are not as uneasy as they once were.

That first year was a bugger for us. Justin had just been diagnosed 10 days earlier and here I was... faced with HALLOWEEN!

All I had in my armory at the time was a list from our CDE with estimated carb counts and the words "let him be a kid first" swirling trough my aching brain.

But there was more than that...

How was HE going to react.

How was I going to handle the mounds of sugar filled packages that he was collecting that night.

My kids have never had free reign of the booty, but would I limit it more? I just didn't know.

The next several weeks after that first Halloween were filled with a few tears and anger. We were still making adjustments, so there were times when candy wasn't an option. Even so... we survived.

The second year(last year) also had its challenges. Justin went low a couple times while tricking for treats. The process itself was somewhat tiresome, but the few weeks after were better compared to the year before.

Then there was year three. THIS YEAR. By golly... I think we've got it. I tried not to give D much thought. While on the candy path... I slipped Justin a Reese PB Cup and then a Juicy Juice a little while later for good measure. I know this sounds like something only a irresponsible D mama would do, but I didn't even make him stop to check his bg(gasp). I simply went on instinct and let him be "a kid first".

When we got home and settled down. Justin's bg came in at a nice 110(Exhale). Some days are good :)

Today, I even slipped a Three Musketeer in Justin's lunch box; just like I use to do BEFORE Diabetes came along.

Is October over yet?

Phew... October sure had turned out to be one busy month. I have a PILE of deposits to do for PTA that I have not gotten to because of training and Leighanna's birthday parties. The PTA's annual auction is in less than 2 weeks so I have been wrapping up the few donations I was suppose to go after. Justin's class basket is sitting here saying... "wrap me and turn me in".

It seems as if the list goes on for miles. ~Seriously

But, the big item this month was Leighanna's big 10... yep, my 4 pound preemie turned 10.
I brought her home on Halloween day 10 year's ago. I still have the Anne Geddes doll we borrowed the Lady bug costume from. She now sits proudly on the plant shelf in Leighanna's room. AHHH memories ~ I love them.

So Now shes 10. You would never look at her and know she was so little. I like to say that's because she was well loved :)
Here is Leighanna on her actual birthday last Friday. We always do a small treat on the actual big day with just the 4 of us...
The cake fits her perfectly :) lol

Then we had the family party... this year's was super simplified compared to most because I have been crazy busy. We just did some light snacks and a simple cake that Leighanna and her dad picked out...AND THEN...
There was the Halloween birthday bash/slumber party. This year I only let her invite 6 girls. (4 came) So all together we had 5 girls here. Last year there were 8 and it was a little nuts!!!

Daddy does not partake in such slumber party festivities (can't really blame him). So he took Justin over to Nonnie's house where they were spoiled as usual.

Us girls had a good time without the boys... we tie dyed shirts(my hands are still purple), decorated cakes, made bracelets and a fort, had a fashion show and watched Ghostbusters. Now, I do have to say... I don't remember Ghostbusters being a little "iffy" for 10 year olds... I guess I look at things differently now that I am a mom. I have not seen it in a while and completely forgot the part were the lady ghost is hovering over Dan Aykroyd and she unbuttons and unzips his pants... then all you see is his face in a pleasant way if you know what I mean.
All I could think is OMG... I don't know half of these girls moms and this is not good.
"COVER YOUR EYES GIRLS". Hopefully they won't discuss that part with their parents :)
Here is our fashionistas after 1 of their wardrobe changes...
Hope you all have a safe and happy Halloween...
